Find them or Fail!

Community support is an element of healthy living that I believe we often take for granted. We frequently prioritize visiting the gym and meals over the immense importance of the presence of the people around us. I bring this up today because I recently had a long conversation with my sister about how the choices of those around you can strongly effect your ability to make the right decisions in your healthy living journey. Think about it, if you aspire to eat a low carb, low fat diet but your best friend constantly chooses In-N-Out as your weekly meeting place, you will have a much harder time making your awesome eating decisions.

As we’ve discussed before, we as human beings have a limited amount of decisions we can make before our decision fatigue kicks in.  We also are more likely to engage in questionable behavior if everyone around us is also engaging in that behavior. Taking that into consideration I have recently realized the importance of those I surround myself with during this healthy living journey. So, I have divided up my support system into five characters that we all need to help keep us on track.

The first individual is the Butt Kicker, this individual pushes you, or drags you to the gym and away from the cheesy taste of pizza. Secondly, you have the Cheerleader, this individual supports your goals regardless of how ridiculous they may sound, they will be the first to tell you they see a difference in your body even if its only minutes after your first workout. You will also require a Twin, this person should be where you are in terms of your healthy living journey, they understand exactly why you can’t sit down and can sympathize with your late night cravings for sushi. Next you will need a Nurse, this devoted friend loves to remind you to take it easy and appreciate the process, they more than likely have been in your shoes, last year or last month, they are great for real life advice. Lastly, you will require a Yes Buddy, this amazing person is the individual who is always there to support whatever new workout or restaurant that you want to try but are too afraid to go to by yourself.

Obviously, you can have eight cheerleaders and or two nurses but it is important that you have friends that are able to fall into any of these five categories, because their support can be the difference between a simple journey and a complicated one. With the help of these amazing friends you are able to catapult into a healthier living lifestyle with a lot more ease. I personally have all of these friends and family present in my life and it has honestly made a great difference in the journey that I have been on. They constantly support what I do and have literally pushed me out of bed when needed.

Today, I challenge you to identify who in your immediate surroundings fall into the above five areas. Who has the capacity to be your butt kicker when needed or your Yes Buddy on Saturday morning adventures? Once you have identified them, tell them your health goals, don’t worry they wont bite and I’m sure they will be ecstatic that you trusted them as accountability partners! Don’t forget that you are doing great, don’t be afraid to include those around you they will be honored that you trusted them with such an important goal. ❤
